Discovery Sailing School is dedicated to the promotion of safe and enjoyable boating. We will show you how to become a good crew member on a cruising yacht, and for the advanced student, how to communicate with your crew to become a good skipper. The courses are designed for the complete novice to the experienced sailor wishing to sharpen his or her skills.

Your instructor is Captain Dennis M. (Denny) Thompson. He is a Coast Guard Licensed Master and holds an RYA Yachtmaster's certificate in Great Britain. He has logged over 65,000 ocean miles including three transatlantic and two transpacific passages and has fifteen years of teaching experience.

The yacht is an offshore equipped Pearson 40 with all the U.S. Coast Guard safety equipment. The accommodations below feature a rich, spacious teak interior with sleeping for six. You will find Dream Catcher a comfortable platform from which to expand your sailing experiences.

Whether it’s to become a first rate first mate or a seasoned skipper, Discovery Sailing School can meet your needs.

Discovery Sailing School offers three different levels to suit your needs.

For the beginning sailor we will teach you to become a competent crewperson.You will learn "the ropes" along with the parts of the yacht, basic boat handling, and how to be an asset on board.

For the intermediate sailor we will teach you to skipper the boat on your own. You will learn the "rules of the road," maneuvering under power and sail, and basic navigation skills.

For the advanced sailor, we will delve into the advanced navigation skills of piloting and dead reckoning, electronic navigation, and weather predicting.

Shore based Navigation: We are pleased to be able to over several levels of shore based navigation classes. Learning to navigate in a class room is the best way to learn navigation.
